The best ten 2004 Top 5 singles

20:55

Nothing like being current when it comes to end of year content, but I thought because such a huge percentage of stuff I write concerns 2004 why not continue the theme? Here are my ten favourite top 5 singles of 2004. Enjoy.
NOTE: This includes singles that were actually released in 2003 because they were still in the top 5 in 2004 and this is my blog and my rules, okay?

10. JOJO - LEAVE (GET OUT)

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #2 (11th September 2004)
MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: Is over here.
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE IN THIS SONG TO BE MY MSN SCREENNAME: But I refuse to cry, no tears will fall from these EYE-EEE-EEES
WHICH PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: Break-up playlist. Make sure you're holding up his phone ready to drop ceremoniously at the "you left her number on your phone" bit.
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: Timeless bit of perfection.

9. CHRISTINA MILIAN - DIP IT LOW

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #2 (15th May 2004)
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE IN THIS SONG TO BE MY MSN SCREENNAME: Roll it all around, pop it out like your back broke. (?!)
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: 'Getting ready for a date' playlist. Also, whatever it is you call That Playlist (no one calls that playlist as it is, do they). (Although an old housemate of mine did have a playlist called Music For The Bedroom which he continually stressed was some kind of private joke between him and a friend but to this day I am not really convinced and have always thought less of him for it).
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: There are some songs that I kind of dread coming on during a night out even though I love them because I KNOW I'll just keep dipping it low and then the next day my legs hurt so much I can barely move. This is one of them (the worst is Dirrty by Christina Aguilera. Once couldn't walk for days after that had been on).

8. KELIS - MILKSHAKE

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #2. 17th January 2004
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG TO BE MY MSN SCREENNAME: You must maintain your charm, same time maintain your halo.
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: Some kind of "I'm putting on a full face of make-up even though I'm doing precisely nothing just because I wanna take a few Instagram shots tonight" playlist. (Hold on a second, I'm off to make a playlist called Thirst Queen).
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: It worries me a little how much I didn't get this but sung it everywhere when I was fourteen, but I suppose it's not quite as concerning as me performing 2 Become 1 at Christmas dinner when I was six. This song is just completely lipsync-to-the-mirror cherry-emoji asking-for-extra-cream-on-your-frappucino amazing.

7. USHER FT LUDACRIS & LIL JON - YEAH!

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #1 - 27th March 2004
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG TO BE MY MSN SCREENAME: Watch out! My outfit's ridiculous, in the club looking so conspicuous.
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: 10/10 club bangers
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: Before I moved to London I only ever went to indie or goth clubs, partly through convenience and partly due to a worrying obsession with boys with a fringe who played guitars (I've totally grown out of that now). Although everybody knew my name and they were always glad I came so I might have got a few slightly-more pop requests played for me here and there, basically I spent most of the time lurching about to The Fratellis.
Enter Freshers Week and my first night to a Real Club in Actual London. (Don't get excited, it was Tiger Tiger). As I walked in this song was playing. You should have seen the look on my face. I HAD ARRIVED. Obviously everyone got up and followed me to the floor and I lipsynced BABY LET'S GO in time with Usher. I will for my whole life never forget that moment. (I haven't heard this on a night out in years though. WHO WANTS TO PLAY IT FOR ME? That's the only thing about London, you can't cultivate the kind of relationship with DJs where you flash a winning smile and they know it's time to put on In For The Kill).

6. BRITNEY SPEARS - EVERYTIME

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION - #1, 26th June 2004
MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: is here.
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG AS MY MSN SCREENNAME: God, they're all a little "u ok hun" for my screenname taste, but I guess "What have I done? You seem to move on easy" gets the job done.
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: I have a playlist euphemistically entitled "Quiet" that this is already on (what it actually means is "Imma stay up drunk on wine hurt like hell and ugly crying black mascara tears").
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: Absolutely beautiful. One of Britney's very best songs.

5. WILL YOUNG - LEAVE RIGHT NOW

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #5, 3rd Jan 2004 (yes yes it was released in November 2003 but I play by my own rules)
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG AS MY MSN SCREENNAME: I'm a little more careful, perhaps it shows. But if I lose the highs at least I'm spared the lows.
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: *Creates a playlist simply called 'Sadface'*
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: You know, we live in a world where any given song is probably about either fancying someone or being in love with them or what it's like when you split up. And this is probably why music is so amazing because fancying people is what makes the world go round. Some songs about love are bad, most are good, some are okay, some are better, but some just HIT THE NAIL ON THE HEAD. And Leave Right Now is one of them. That middle 8, man.

4. DESTINY'S CHILD - LOSE MY BREATH

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #2
MY ORIGINAL REVIEW: Is over here.
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG AS MY MSN SCREENNAME: I'm starting to believe you that I'm way too much for you.
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO?: I'm off to create a 'Hurry Up' playlist, right now, including this, Come and Get It by Selena Gomez and Move by Little Mix. (I have no idea why this playlist doesn't already exist because if it did I would be subtweeting it all the time).
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: Timeless club banger. I'm sure we'll still be embarrassing ourselves to this and thinking we look really good in 2024.

3. OUTKAST - HEY YA

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #4 - 31st January 2004 (yes again this originally came out in 2003 but MY BLOG MY RULES)
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG AS MY MSN SCREENAME: If they say that "nothing is forever", then what makes, then what makes, then what makes, then what makes love the exception?
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO?: "Songs to perform on X Factor". I think I'll do this on Big Band week. It will be my Uptown Funk moment. I will be wearing a green sparkly dress. (Alright I've thought about this at length for several years).
THOUGHTS, IN GENERAL: I mean surely objectively this is one of the greatest songs of all time? Maybe it's all the Christmas cheer in the air but I can't even listen to it with a huge grin across my face. This is another song that does not come on often enough on a night out. I despo need to befriend a London DJ. Feel free to email gonetodeadlock@gmail.com if you are a DJ and fancy being my friend. I'm dead supportive and am really good at ordering pizza so you are basically missing out if you are not already my friend, to be honest.

2. RACHEL STEVENS - SOME GIRLS

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #2 (27th July 2014)
ORIGINAL REVIEW: Is here.
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG AS MY MSN SCREENNAME: This won't last for long, not forever, and the champagne makes it taste so much better.
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: I reckon this might be a good addition to any kind of 'Existential Crisis' playlist, really, which is actually my favourite kind of playlist.
GENERAL THOUGHTS: This song remains completely amazing, and I think it is worth repeating that Geri Halliwell reportedly locked herself in Richard X's car attempting to get this song for herself. It's one of my 10 most played songs of 2014 due to its' resurgence in my Spotify after blogging about it in the summer, in fact!

1. BRITNEY SPEARS - TOXIC

PEAK 2004 CHART POSITION: #1 - 13 Mar 2004
IF I WAS GOING TO CHOOSE ONE LINE FROM THIS SONG AS MY MSN SCREENNAME: To be honest I'm pretty sure "With a taste of that poison paradise" was my MSN screenname for quite a significant amount of time.
WHAT PLAYLIST SHOULD YOU ADD THIS TO: Your Greatest Songs Of All Time playlist, like me. Honestly.
GENERAL THOUGHTS: I mean, let's be real. One of the greatest songs of all time (but still not QUITE Britney's best - Stronger and the criminally underrated Overprotected still just about edge it). The daydreams I would have about myself lipsyncing this on stage when I was 14! Luckily I've grown out of that.

Hope you all enjoyed this. Maybe at some point if you're lucky I'll do something "relevant" and "current." Please, share with me your opinions, although bear in mind if they do not exactly correlate to my own I'll probably just start chanting DIS-A-GREE and not listen to a word you say.
