10 Years Ago Vs Today

19:56

We are now fully into peak-Q4 which is why the vast majority of our ten songs today are at worst highly notable and at best completely amazing.

TOP 5 10 YEARS AGO - 27/11/2004

5. MCFLY -  ROOM ON THE THIRD FLOOR (New Entry)

This is in my top ten McFly songs (and you know that girl in your year at school who was a loser and went to all of McFly's concerts and called up the radio every day requesting their songs and wrote all her French homework about them? Yeah, that was me.) A really underrated song about not taking things too seriously, something that McFly have always done perfectly and is the major reason they are so brilliant. I've been saying for quite some time that McFly are better than the Beatles and yeah, the NA NA NA NA bits in this are wayyyy better than Hey Jude.

SCORE: 9/10

4. GWEN STEFANI - WHAT YOU WAITING FOR? (New Entry)

This song is absolutely completely amazing. When I was 14 Love Angel Music Baby was probably my favourite album (and the source of almost all of my MSN screen names). But then again, the amazing thing about pop music is that although I would have definitely given this a ten out of ten when I was 14 and I adored it, now it's even better because I am a grown up and I GET IT and how could a fourteen year old possibly get it? I encourage anyone new to adulthood making any kind of decision to sit down tonight and think about: Naturally I'm worried if I do it alone - but who really cares, cos it's your life, you never know, it could be great?

Also: Amazing video. Also: #FeministAnthem. Also: Thanks Gwen, you're right, life is short and I am capable.

SCORE: 10/10

3. LEMAR - IF THERE'S ANY JUSTICE (New Entry)

This is a song about fancying someone who's already got a boyfriend. Unfortunately I can relate very much to the point that there is not much justice in the world as there might be one in every hundred person I fancy who are both straight and single, and the only people that fancy me appear to be people who think it's appropriate to set up weird anonymous Twitter accounts about it.

Anyway, I used to listen to the radio for hours on end in 2004 (my friends and I would write each other letters in the evenings after school whilst listening to the radio and comment on all the songs - seriously. As an adult this has translated into my Twitter account) and this song was played about four times an hour. And you know what? It's amazing! I hit play expecting to be giving it a 7 but I've literally played it about 20 times since and it is so lovely and Lemar has such a great voice. I spent an hour tidying (yes really) just listening to this song on repeat to the extent I feel my housemates are concerned, and devised quite an expert routine of twirls and air grabs. I am particularly good at the "JUST BECAUSE HE'S WRAPPED AROUND YOUR FINGER" bit. This song is also really lovely to listen to when drinking a cup of tea on a Sunday and wearing a chunky cardigan. So I'm gonna give it a 10 and before you hate, try listening to the song five times and THEN come at me.

Score: 10/10

2. DESTINY'S CHILD - LOSE MY BREATH (New Entry)

The third week at number two for this stone cold CLASSIC and unfortunately for the third week in a row a much inferior song reached number one :(. As a side note, I bet in real life if you were walking down the road and were suddenly approached by a clone of yourself dancing you'd actually be very frightened and would probably not be able to hold your own in a dance-off, 10/10 high ponytails or not.

SCORE: 10/10

1. GIRLS ALOUD - STAND BY YOU (New Entry)

Girls Aloud. My favourite girl group of all time. This song. Not good. Maybe one out of every three weeks when writing this blog a song will come up that is so utterly tedious and so difficult to squeeze a single dry sentence out of that I wonder why I have even committed myself to this ridiculous feature. Well, this is one of those songs. In brief:

1. This cover adds precisely NOTHING to the original...
2. ...which is nowhere near as good as everyone says it is anyway.
3. Nicola's hair in this video is brown and this is really upsetting.
4. When uploading this video on YouTube they couldn't even be bothered to find a proper still so there we have it, a bunch of soggy pebbles. Look above.

Not a fan.

SCORE: 4/10

TOP 5 TODAY: 01/12/2014

5. CLEAN BANDIT FT JESS GLYNNE - REAL LOVE (Down from 2)

So last night in the Uber home from the 'club' the new Spotify/Uber feature very conveniently for the driver "wasn't working". This was very distressing as I'd hoped to listen to Keep Holding On by Avril Lavigne. So the driver put Capital FM on instead and they played Rather Be and then this one after the other! Excessive. Clean Bandit ft Jess Glynne is just so Capital FM. (To be fair, arguably, I am just so Capital FM.)

Score: 9/10

4. ED SHEERAN - THINKING OUT LOUD (Non-mover)

Weekly Is Ed Sheeran My Boyfriend Yet Update:
No.

Score: 8/10 (Although in retrospect this is probably AS good as that Lemar song)

3. OLLY MURS FT TRAVIE MCCOY - WRAPPED UP (Non-mover)

If there was any justice in the world, Olly would never have gone in for X Factor, he'd have still been in a call centre, I'd have met him on a bus, and I would be his girl, and somehow Troublemaker and Heart Skips A Beat would still exist. (Well done on your number one album Olly.)

SCORE: 7/10

2. BAND AID 30 - DO THEY KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS?

Tomorrow is the first of December which means religiously it's the first day we're allowed to start properly listening to Christmas songs. Which song will you treat yourself to first? I think I'll go for Christmas Wrapping first, and then text my sister the full lyrics of Rockin Around The Christmas Tree so she is able to begin her emotional preparation for the return of the prodigal (Me.)

SCORE: 3/10 and remember... please text DONATE to 70000 to donate £5 to the DEC Ebola Crisis Appeal.

1. TAKE THAT - THESE DAYS (New Entry)

In theory Take That with three people is lonely and sad. One third of Take That, that's THIRTY THREE PERCENT, is now Gary 'Let It Go by Passenger was the best song of 2013' Barlow.

In execution this is easily one of Take That's best five songs. Can it be explained? No. Is it utterly baffling that this isn't some dreary man ballad? Yes. Aren't Take That now 33% people who said Frankie Cocozza was good? Yes. But is this song brilliant? Well, mainly. It's not perfect but it definitely deserves a 9. It's just a bop, okay?

For every week this amazing song is in the top 5 I will forgive Gary Barlow for ONE of his X Factor sins. This week, I forgive him for his overuse of terms like "vibrato" during his "judging critiques" in his attempt to sound credible.

SCORE: 9/10

DRUM ROLL..... THE RESULTS!!!!!!!!!
