Popstars' ice bucket challenge vs their songs about being cold

BRITNEY SPEARS

The ice bucket challenge video:

Britney keeps her nominations fairly low key with Adam Sandler the only noted A-lister. Particular highlights include when she loses her glasses and especially when she swears.

The song about being cold:

'Break The Ice' is a brilliant song and deserved to chart much better than number 15 in the UK. The song opens "It's been a while. I know I shouldn't have kept you waiting. But I'm here now" - it would be a good song to always play when you entered the room at a party. The chorus is also fab. Unfortunately the video is animated. There has never been a good animated video for any song. I welcome you to challenge this but before you start if you say Viva Forever by the Spice Girls you are wrong. 9/10

KATY PERRY

The ice bucket challenge video:

Katy. much like Britney, loses her sunglasses but apart from that manages to maintain composure and posture throughout. Her interesting nomination choice was Madonna, who at the time of writing was yet to take part. I am not going to make the obvious "because she's afraid of melting" joke".

The song about being cold:

Katy's second single remains one of her very best songs. It reached number 4 back in 2008. The song always feels fresh, the chorus is perfect and the song is so, so Katy - this is what she should be forever aspiring to emulate. Gold stars all round. 10/10

RIHANNA

The ice bucket challenge video:

The video goes on forever as it also includes Eminem also being 'iced' and then choosing to nominate RiRi. Rihanna reacts pretty calmly and loses no major accessories. She also forgot to nominate anyone else. Given this whole thing is supposed to be an exercise in proving you have famous friends, overall it's a bit of a let down.

The song about being cold:

Cold Case Love is an album track from Rated R (Rihanna's best album). Unfortunately it's one of the weaker tracks from the album, but given the huge strength of the album this isn't necessarily a bad thing -it's a nice little ballad likening a relationship postmortem to solving a 'cold case'. Solving a 'cold case' is my favourite type of detective TV show. Her vocals on this are great. 7/10

ADAM LEVINE

The ice bucket challenge video:

Adam Levine does his ice bucket challenge alongside Carson Daly and Blake Shelton, both of whom were far more entertaining I must say (particulaly Carson nominating Kevin from the Backstreet Boys(!)). He forgets to nominate anyone. I doubt the water was that cold as he reacts quite normally and then, as if remembering this is what he was supposed to say, adds "Oh. That's Cold."

The song about being cold:

Songs About Jane is an amazing album and Shiver is one of the better tracks on it. It's strange to think Songs About Jane came out as long ago as 2002, but this is literally fact and I can remember coming back over and over again to the amazing guitars of Shiver alongside Adam's excellent and hot vocal delivery. It's a shame as I know I'm supposed to fancy Adam Levine but after watching his video I think it's going to be Blake Shelton who gets a google tonight. 8/10.

GWEN STEFANI

The ice bucket challenge video:

I wonder what it would be like to have Blake Shelton pour a bucket of ice on my head? Anyway, Gwen approaches her ice bucket challenge initially with hysteria, screaming before the bucket has been lifted, and then halfway through complains 'you aren't getting it on my head!' 'Okay, I'll go faster" replies Blake. *slips off into reverie* ANYWAY, back on point, Gwen chooses some great celeb nominations at the end, namely, Nicole 'Flawless Queen' Richie.

The song about being cold:

'Early Winter' was written by a member of Keane and sounds lke it, but don't worry, it's still good. "The sun's getting cold, it's snowing, looks like an early winter for us" is so sad and beautiful. Gwen 'Dorian Gray' Stefani looks amazing in the video. 9/10

TAYLOR SWIFT

The ice bucket challenge video:

Taylor 'oh look at me I'm so normal' Swift takes part in the ice bucket challenge with one of her famous mates (surprise surprise) and appears to use the opportunity to prove that she has as many famous friends as possible. They were rehearsing for her VMA performance at the time, which in the end turned out pretty good, but even with all that choreography it wasn't as good as her with the piano at the Grammys was it?

The song about being cold:

Cold As You is basically a country song and is from her self-titled debut album, but when else am I going to get an opportunity to blog about it eh? "What a rainy ending to a perfect day, every smile you give is condescending". Powerful. It's a typical country ballad so don't listen if that's not your scene but if you're a casual Taylor fan that hasn't delved into her early stuff it's well worth checking out. 9/10

SPECIAL MENTIONS GO TO:
CHERYL COLE - possible tenuously linked song 'The Flood'
NICOLE SCHERZINGER - possible tenuously linked song 'Wet' (which is 10/10).

I've been nominated for the ice bucket challenge twice since working on this blog post (yes, I have friends) and have yet to be decided whether I'll take the metaphorical and literal plunge, but in the meantime, don't forget to donate to the UK MND association!
